In the fall of 2006, a land slide occurred on a cliff adjoining the beach between Hendry's Beach
and Hope Ranch. The newly exposed rock was composed of oil bearing shale which ignited and
smoldered for several months. Hoses were brought in to wet the rock but the rocks burned
until the oil was expended.
