Big Diomede is 2.3 miles to the west and past the International Date Line. Once a
Russian military base, only a weather station and a small number of military personnel
remain. The divide between the two islands has been labeled the "Ice Curtain".

In past winters, walking between islands was possible and families might live on both
islands. Since 1948, no civilians remain on Big Diomede and ice is less frequent.
