The first encounter is a Paris tradition - the gold coin con. A person
walks past and "happens" to find a gold ring on the ground by your feet
and offers to give it to you. If accepted, they will then ask for money
to share in your good fortune in obtaining the ring. In three hours of
walking, 4 different people happened to find a ring at my feet.
