Siem Reap is best known for its historic temple complex. Most of the temples
were abandoned centuries ago only to be "rediscovered" by the French in the
early part of the 20th century. Restoration continues to this day.
Built in the early 13th century, Ta Prohm was originally a Buddhist monastery.
Once a home to over 12,000 people, the temple was abandoned and neglected
from the 15th century until conservation efforts began.
Unlike other temples in the area, Ta Prohm was left much as it was found in
modern times. Some restoration is now being done to stabilize the temple
and to remove trees and shrubbery for better access.
