Rice is a major component of the Bhutanese diet. We arrived in Paro
soon after the harvest and horses were often turned out to the fields
to eat what grains were left.

The rice fields are terraced, an important design in a mountainous
country without much flat land. There are earthen dams that are
broken and rebuilt to guide the water into specific fields.
