Destroyers and Tender at Newport, Rhode Island in 1962

Newport, RI.

Photo was made between pier's one and two at Newport, RI. At this time, in 1961, or 62, there were always WWII era destroyers, and destroyer escorts tied up near the destroyer tenders. The major repair work was done by the tenders, and the sailors needed some Thames Street time after being at sea for as long as a month. We had the cold war going on with Russia, and the ships were often sent to do radar picket duty in the north atlantic. When the ships docked, in winter, they often had lots of thick ice coating the upper structures.

Mr. Dockery,
Your pictures brought back some wonderful memories. I was born at Newport Naval Hospital in 1961. My father was stationed there. He taught at OCS and was a Chief (Boiler Operator).
I still remember the ships lined up at the pier especially at Christmas when they were often lit up.
