For several hundred years, and before electricity, ice was cut into blocks and stored in sawdust and wood shavings, so that in the warmer months ice was availabe. Large estates had special ice houses, with some of them being under ground. If ice was gathered in below zero weather, it would stay frozen for months, if quickly stored, and insulated.
