Berniece "Woody" Woods was our landlady at 82 mill street in Newport. She ran a tight ship, but cared for every one of us. (This photo was made in the spring/summer of 1962 in her kitchen).
Woody had retired from the American Red Cross, and was teaching Greek part time at a small college in Newport when we lived at her house. Her Father had been Counsel General to both India, and China in the late 1920's or early 1930's. Woody was well connected in Newport, and it's old families.
She never had children, but adopted a lot of people in her lifetime. I last time I talked to her was in 2001. She was in her ninties, but her voice sounded clear and her mind was still sharp. She invited me to come back to Newport for a visit with her, and I should have gone. She said that she would take me up to the third floor where her fathers stuff was stored. The third floor was off limits in 1962.
Woody died in 2006, I was told, and left her house to a woman friend who later sold it.
I think the house was built in the early 1800's, and at one time had a song written about it.)
