The Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) is the only brown-backed woodpecker in the East, and the only woodpecker in North America that commonly feeds on the ground, searching for ants and beetle larvae on lawns or even sidewalks.
I was looking forward to recording the early life of young Flickers until they were able to fly from their nest. Unfortunately, there has been no further activity at the prepared nest site. There are no young ones and I have not seen either adult Flicker at the nest site in more than 3 weeks. I imagine their mating was unsuccessful this spring. I will have to wait until next spring and hope that the nest site becomes inhabited with young Flickers.
