This strange practice is designed to provide a barrier to the jawed land leeches (family Haemadipsidae) that inhabit the moist jungles and terrain in the middle Himalayas. These interesting creatures have five pairs of eyes, are about one inch long and have both an anti-coagulant and topical anesthetic in their saliva so the victim rarely feels the bite.
