This was our first view of Machu Picchu from across the deep valley a one-day hike away. The light area on the saddle of the distant mountain is caused by the vertical stone walls of the terraces as they spill over the mountainside. The small peak Hyanu Picchu is shown to the left of the saddle. The town of Aguas Calientes lies in the opposite valley. It is obvious why the Incas felt this site was inaccessible except for their own paths. It is also obvious why they never 'invented' the wheel because they couldn't use them.
