The Congregational Church in Redding, California

The Congregational Church in Redding, California, was the last church designed by Frank Lloyd Wright before he died in 1959. The church was begun in 1957 and dedicated in 1963. The full plans of the multi-building design are yet to be realized.

When asked if he would consider designing the church, Mr. Wright responded to the proposal with these words: "Tell the people of the little church that I will help them out. If I like the 'feel' of a job, I take it."

Mr. Wright, with tongue in cheek, referred to the church design as "pole and boulder Gothic" (these words can be seen in his writing on the framed
drawings in the church school hall). He stated that the design was to represent the form of a tent, the ancient dwelling of Israel, as a symbol of temporary, migratory and transient lives. He wanted the church to appear to grow out of the earth, and the pulpit area was designed to resemble a cave.
