This lighthouse was built as part of a program to improve safety for ships entering the Ems; in the same year the directional light was added to the Borkum Großer tower and the Pilsum and Campen lighthouses were built. The light was deactivated August 31, 2003, after changes in the ship channel made it obsolete. However, the tower is being maintained: in the fall of 2006 it was repaired and repainted.
