Geophysical study of Volcan Popocatepetl in June 2013. The volcano has been active for a number of years and while I was in Mexico, there were regular ash eruptions and explosions from the crater. I was working with the Institute of Geophysics at UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico) using a geophysical method called magnetotellurics, to map the distribution of magma below the volcano. We have been using this method at a number of volcanos worldwide to understand the causes of volcanic unrest and determine the potential for future eruptions.
