Deccan Traps

The Deccan Traps are a set of large basalt flows that were erupted 65 million years ago. Each layer corresponds to an individual eruption. There is an ongoing debate about whether these eruptions were directly involved in the mass extinction at that time, which included the dinosaurs. These photographs were taken along the Mumbai-Pune road where the Karla Caves allow an interesting view inside the basalt layers.
