Bristol City Docks - John Cabot

The bronze statue of John Cabot sitting with arms crossed was made by Stephen Joyce in 1985; the statue is life size and is positioned on the cobbled street looking out at the quay.
John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) was an Italian master mariner who sailed his ship the Matthew from Bristol in 1497 to discover Newfoundland, in North America.
Cabot is commonly recognised to be the first European to visit the continent since the Norse exploration of the Americas in the early eleventh century.

Nice capture. It appears as though Mr. Cabot is not impressed by the sax & bass.

I really like the composition! Having the people on each side in the background gives the statue a human touch. It makes the viewer think more in terms of the person represented!

Very unique 'rough' bronze - it 'grows' on you as you examine it!

doesn't look too happy about it, perhaps calling him Giovanni would bring back his smile

Excellent detail on the sculpture, and I like that background, too. V.
