For me he seems to be a symbol of the one-child generation in China, proprietarily stepping through history.

Yes, it is a delightful echo of that shot. You use scale incongruity well here -- the kid is small, the steps numerous. Yet he seems bent on climbing all of of them. The color contrast is also very effective.
