Yes, China, indeed. The fact that they are blackened with age, and not painted in vivid colors as they are in the Forbidden City and at the Temple of Heaven, make a huge difference in terms of meaning. They look ancient, telling us that this wall as been there for a long long time.

And for me they are a reminder that the wall is of China, the same decorative traditions apply here at the wall as elsewhere.

Such small details, juxtaposed against the softly focused wall that represents one of the biggest engineering feats of all time. The tiny animals and ancient tiles bring a sense of time to this
amazing structure.
