View from the Wall
Pingyao, China - September, 2007

This is a view down one of the main tourist streets of the city. The men on the roof are repairing it.

From the roof ornaments in the foreground, to the rooftops, to the two roof workers, to the flag, to the city tower, to the bustle of the street, you have captured the essence of PingYao.
Beautifully done!

I am taken with the shape and detail of this old old rooftop, with the men up there working on it....against the small but extremely colorful group of tourists below who come to visit and reflect on these sites. The architecture is impossibly beautiful and detailed, representing hundreds if not thousands of hours of work.

This picture would have been a lovely study of yesterday and today even if you had only shown us the left hand side of the picture, where today's tourists and residents walk below arching roofs five centuries old. By adding the right hand side to that concept, you go beyond making a lovely picture, and make a great one. The two men on the roof, one of them looking right at us, add a social commentary to the image. They are supposed to repairing the roofs, but they seem to be doing it at their own pace. The roofs are five hundred years old, so why rush? The Chinese flag flying in the background brings yesterday and today together once more. There is even an aesthetic linkage between the left and right hand side of the picture here. The shadows created by the edges of the roof in the middle of the picture seem to form the figure of man relaxing. The diagonal line in that shadow can be seen as a man's arm. It perfectly echos the thrust of the actual worker's leg. Amazing, Tim.
