Relics of the Past

We visited a neighborhood of antique dealers. Mao era statues were everywhere.

At one time the West, represented by this doll, loomed large vis-a-vis the Maoist regime. Now, however, the scale might be changed somewhat as China's economy grows and grows and grows.

There is such incongruity here, Tim -- you contrast big vs small, political vs apolitical, drab vs. colorful. The fact that the big doll is half-dressed and seems to be thinking about relieving himself in the presence of Mao, etc., is very amusing as well.

Interesting that the largest doll is white! This is one of my favorite shots of yours in this gallery! What fun!
