An American
Manzanar National Monument, California, April 2007

As I stated in my gallery introduction, one of the strongest messages I learned from the Pilgrimage was that we are all Americans and our country needs to preserve the rights of all its citizens.

Despite our transgressions and misdeeds, people still identify with America and wrap themselves around the ideals inspired by the flag.....a very poignant statement given the setting.

And well abstracted, too. It reminds in a way of the American Indian paintings by Fritz Scholder.
() Scholder used this theme many times -- the American flag as an Indian security blanket.

Thanks, Phil, for you comment - and for seeing the sense of protection that our government can provide when it functions well.

Yes, everyone connected with this event, no matter their ethnic origins, are Americans. The flag as umbrells suggests protections currently provided by the national government, whle the dress below it represents someone from an Asian background. Well stated.
