Thank you for your two comments - the first because you put into words what I was trying to say with the image - and secondly for your suggestion of a different way to have seen this as I made the picture. Lonely things in the upper left quadrant are a common composition for me - thanks for helping me remember to push my edges.
i can't help but wonder what the image would be like had you framed it with the posy in the bottom right corner instead, as though it had been dropped and the people had walked up and out of the frame...
