I'm with Wendy and Carol on this -- it is the element of surprise that takes this picture from just another arty look at a stairway to an image charged with tension. That hand fragment (it is not even a complete hand) entering the picture at the upper right hand corner seems to control the railing, almost as weapon. Although people use steps, we expect to see a person, not just part of a hand. You confound our expectations with this concept. Each step becomes a rhythmic counterpoint to the thrust of that railing, in both form and color. It is startling picture, for me an image that is all about surprise, energy, thrust, and lift.
