This makes me wonder if a member of my family, who came through Ellis Island, stood by this very window and saw Manhattan Island for the first time. For me, this is a window on the future and, as such, represents the hopes and dreams of thousands of immigrants who passed through this check point on their way to a new life in a new world.
We both shot this wonderful scene, nearly side by side. As usual, you went vertical, and used the window to restrain the eye, forcing it to feel imprisoned here along with those who never were able to take the final journey across the water. I went horizontal, stressing the contrast between the dealing immigration station and the
modern skyline.
