Lone Tree
Northern Iceland - July 2009

Iceland was almost completely deforested by a combination of sheep grazing and the use of wood to fuel the Iron Age. They have an active reforestation program and there are small groves of trees through out the landscape. Here, though, you can see one lone tree standing next to the left hand house.

A gorgeous scene. I can see why you travelled to Iceland here -- there are few places on earth that look like this. The emptiness of it all is underscored by the juxtaposition of darkness and light. The delicate clouds add staggering scale context.

Thanks for your comment Carol - now on to your question - I processed most of the images in this gallery using Lightroom and Photoshop. In Photoshop I used PercepTool for luminance and Noiseware for noise reduction, but I had to be very light handed with Noiseware so that the images didn't look like they were wrapped with cellophane.
