GALLERY:: Pushing Edges -Photoshop for the Soul ::November 2004

For a glorious week in November 2004 I was able to attend a workshop on the island of Molokai. The workshop was lead by Jack Davis, Dewitt Jones and Rik Cooke. We spent the morning photographing the wonderful island of Molokai and the afternoon in Photoshop lab with Guru Jack Davis. The photographic aspect of the workshop encouraged us to explore the edges of our image making - to deal with not only what we saw, but with what we thought and felt about it - and to push the boundaries of how we usually shot and try to see and shoot differently. Rik and DeWitt were enjoying exploring digital infrared photography and Jack was just enthusiastic about shooting, including "drive-by" images taken from a moving vehicle. These images, then, represent some of my pushing myself.

Tim, an enhanced eye is evident in these latest photos. In the viewing my view of the world was enhanced as well. Some of my favorites: Detergent, Moon comb, Shadows and Patterns, Stillness, Thought and Ripples, but for fun I'd keep them next to each other and reverse the titles (Ripples made me think of thoughts spreading out and the young woman obviously in thought looks like she has ripppling hair), Remebrance which brought to mind E. B. White's quote of his Aunt Caroline, "Remembrance is sufficient of the beauty we have seen."
Must tell you sister Carolyn's daughter, Laurie, has accepted a teaching position at the Univ. of Hawaii, to begin in Feb. Am forwarding these to her.

These are exquisite. The corals and blacks are delicious. Your "Sunset" really has a 40's-midcentury feel (to me anyway). I can hear the ukeleles. I think that you're ready for your coffee table book and I'll be the first to buy it. Be sure to include "Detergent beauty". By the way...how did you really feel about Waikiki?

Kepp up the good work cuz. i wish I had the ti, to dp something like this. I cautght a really cool pi of the little red church at Yosemite that I'll have to send to you. I didn;t notice the cross till we printed the photo. Taken with a refill for life camera at from Walgreen's.

You have indeed push some edges here, Tim. You have done more than just shoot differently to be different. You have opened up your eyes to see in ways that enable you to see things of substance you might otherwise have missed. I've noted a few examples for you here.
