2019 Volkswagen Mk7 Jetta GLI Autobahn
While this is the 2019 Autobahn and not its sibling 35th Anniversary Edition, my first GLI was that first iteration 1984 GLI. 35 years later, the contrasts are legion and after a long time this VW is again worthy of a GLI badge.
In a stark departure from 25 years of AWD, I'm back in a front wheel drive sport sedan. My last FWD was a mid nineties Acura GSR with its rev happy, naturally aspirated VTEC 4 banger. FWD has come a long way:)
Its noteworthy that this is the first automobile with an automatic transmission I've personally ever owned with its 7 speed dual clutch DSG.
I find this transmision, the progressive variable-ratio steering & XDS Cross Differential System with VAQ mechanical diff to be particularly effective, although wet weather straight-line acceleration is remarkably loose.
This VW is comfortable and a lot of fun for the money and does most things fairly elegantly.
Truth in advertising:) While this actually is my VW, this image was taken in the dealer parking lot minutes before I took possession. I composited a new background and added the licence plate in post.
