As well as waiting for the first North American WRX, I also waited (and waited and waited) for the hatchback 2008 Subaru WRX STI
Like that 68 Vette, this car is a beast...but in a good way. While not as hardcore as its predecessors, it launches with a vengeance and is still tractable accelerating violently around a tight corner.

(Edit 060620: As of this date, I still think this is the best looking of all the WRX/STI variants)
