Melanistic jet-black phenotype Eastern Gray Squirrel

Lake Frederick, Virginia

Took this in the tree line between my backyard and Lake Frederick. He is super attractive, but stands out like a sore thumb. Recently been seeing two of them
and that just might explain why I'm also seeing a Red-tailed Hawk.

Nicely photographed Don. I have 4 - 5 of these in my yard most of the time, often sitting on our fence and looking at us in a similar pose. The black/melanistic ones are the most predominant here. There are some gray/brown ones too and also lots of little Reds.

I like the way they fold their paws together when standing upright. Well photographed on a lichen covered branch.
