Red Valvet (Ant)

Boyce, Virginia

Except - it's NOT an ant at all - - it's a female wasp, and she's wingless. This is the 2nd observation of this lady wasp in the same area, so this time I took a photo. She's well over a 1/2" long.
From research, the female is wingless and much redder than the male who has wings and is more orange.
