If you didn't negatively compensate, the dog would have come out gray, and the flash reflection off of the fur would have been a fairly burnt out white.

I think. ;-)

That's how it should work, anyway.

I agree, think the exposure is perfect! Luke

Thanks Duke. I am learning about the flash exposure comp by trial and error. If I hadn't compensated by underexposing on the camera, what would have happened? I go by the histogram. I could have bracketed, but she is not a willing model! I had to sneak up on her. She is part Rotweiller, but even the Vet had a hard time seeing it. She has rotty eyes, I think.

Did you have a minus compensation on the flash also?
I would think without that minus comp, you would have gotten less detail- the places where the fur reflected the flash would have been too white.

I think this exposure- both in genereal and the flash exposure, are right on the money.

I was fooling around with the flash exp compensation. (on camera flash) That is a new idea for me.... I usually find the I have to underexpose minus 1/3 or 2/3 a stop on the camera exposure as well with this camera. I was happy to get as much detail in her fur as I did. I guess if I didn't compensate I would have gotten more detail?
thanks, Christy
