Siena to Assisi, via S. Antimo, Lunch, Orvieto & Todi, 300km. Wow, what a day of ridding, we stopped for lunch grilled by Uli, the driver of the Edelweiss van & trailer. Uli is the man and has the hardest job. It is his responsibility to load our luggage after we bring it down from our hotel room and then to have it waiting in our next hotel room before we arrive. His job was made harder today by having to beat us to the lunch spot, and have lunch ready for our arrival. The roads from the lunch stop to Todi where even more incredible, at first I’m sheepish about my feet catching on the road, but after awhile it becomes common place. I reposition my feet, pointing my toes skyward so that the abuse from the road will be taken by the foot peg and not my boots. Our bikes go endlessly with the road, right, left, right, left…seemingly forever, a never ending race track, except for the occasional hair pin and short strait away. I am following Ben, who is directly behind Christian, with Keith right behind me. It was the hardest I have ever ridden. My day at the race track in Shannonville a couple years previous pales in comparison to this road, at one point I thought I was going to lose it and lay it down, cursing loudly, I pulled it back up, corrected and re-leaned into the tight corner. What took a lifetime in my mind was actually only one brief second, not enough for her to start panicking but enough for her to say a few prayers. As the sun started to set we road into Assisi, our hotel room in the Subasio had the most breathtaking view of the valley and leaf covered restaurant below. We dined in this “Garden room” and had the pleasure of Christian sitting at our table. Tonight was Amy Olin’s birthday and they had a special birthday cake for her, to go along with the homemade card given to her at breakfast. After diner Christian gave us a “guided tour” of Assisi the home of San Francis. Back at the hotel we celebrated Amy’s birthday with a bottle of wine on the patio overlooking the lights of the valley below.
