I could sleep no more and was up at 7:00AM. Today was a rest day and I was going to use it as such, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t going to go for a ride. Keith Olin joined me as I tried to find the Medieval Piccolo Castle at Monteriggioni. We had seen it on our way into town; Piccolo castle was surrounded by a wall with many turrets along its walls. Funny, now that I look at my map, I can see why Keith and I had gotten lost. Keith’s map had us going a different route to Montecagnano and over the mountain to Scorgiano. It was better that way anyway, since the roads up over the mountain to Scorgiano were serpentine and gave us practice for the roads to come during the next ride. We finally realized our error and made it to Piccolo Castle after stopping for a coffee. The sad thing is that Piccolo Castile is only about 15 minutes from the hotel, but took us close to 3 hours to get there and back. As Christian say’s “Any day without getting lost, is commuting”. Keith and I enjoyed a couple of beers outside of the hotel bar, where we were met by Gerry and Benn. We ended up at a bar in the Piazza del Campo, on a balcony for 8 that overlooked the plaza. We sat there having Tetley’s beer and people watching. We felt like royalty, and waved to anyone who looked our way, or if they were cute, we would blow them kisses, oh, if we only had Mardi Gras beads to cast down. Bob & Donna walked by and we invited them up for a pint. From the pub we made our way to a recommended spot for dinner. After dinner we took a bus back to the hotel to get ready for another days ride.
