D70-D200compare

Here is what I did in this test: shot the slanted edge target with both D70 and D200 using Sigma 18-50 at f5.6 where it gets highest resolution. In-camera sharpening was changed thru all available settings from "None" to "High" while pics were recorded as both NEF and JPEG. Test pics were analyzed with Imatest SFR module that measures resolution and shows the step response where white to black transition occurs. That way both sharpening quantity and quality could be evaluated. Shown are two pairs of charts showing the best resolution you can get with my Sigma 18-50 using D70 and D200, doing JPEG. How those two particular charts were selected among 2x6 charts with varying sharpening? First, most appropriate D70 sharpening version was selected. When using Imatest it is easily recognized as the black chart curve closest to the standard or "ideal" sharpening (red) curve. In the case of D70 and Sigma 18-50 (center, 18mm, f5.6) it is obtained with "Low" sharpening. As only a mild difference was measured between JPEG and NCE converted NEF, NCE was used for further selections and evaluations. After establishing the most accurate D70 sharpening (naked eye evaluation confirmed the choice), D200 set of pics were checked for the same amount of sharpness. It was not a surprise to find out that the same sharpening setting doesn't give the same sharpness with D70 and D200. To get exactly equally sharp pic from D200, in-camera (or NCE) sharpening had to be set to "Normal", i.e. raised by two steps! Later tests confirmed this finding even with lower res lenses where in general, sharpening had to be raised, but two step D70 to D200 difference remained. So, the conclusion would be: if you've shot with your XYZ lens on D70 using, let's say, "Normal" sharpening, when using the same lens on D200 you should set sharpening to "High".
