Resolution, standard sharpening

USAF1951 test target (rotated by 45 degrees, in order to avoid moire interference. See here: http://www.pbase.com/miljenko/res_measure_howto) shot with Nikon D70 and Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens at f/8 - one of the highest resolution Nikon lenses. Camera settings at default, except for sharpening that was completelly off. RAW file opened with the following converters: Nikon Capture Editor v4.1.3, Adobe Photoshop CS with Adobe Camera Raw v2.3, Phase One C1 LE v3.5.2, Bibble Labs Bibble Lite v4.1 and Raw Magick Lite v0.930 Beta. All sharpening within those converters turned off (where available) and no other processing done other than opening and saving file. Exported as 16-bit tiff or psd into Adobe Photoshop CS. Actions performed in PS CS in exact order: Crop to 250 x 250 pixels, standard sharpening (see why I prefer standard Photoshop sharpening for hi-res lenses here: http://www.pbase.com/miljenko/image/34165936 ), adding lettering, Sharp Bicubic Resize to 200% for easier evaluation. Pic saved as JPEG level 9.
Notice big differences among converted samples: elevated brightness and jagged edges with Bibble, sharpening hallos (it obviously does a fair ammount of sharpening you can't control) with C1, relativelly good resolution/artifacts balance with NCE, poor resolution with ACR and very decent result with RM, showing exceptional resolution. Nikon D70 has theoretical CCD resolution limit of about 80 lp/mm for 10% black to white contrast ratio, the minimum you can resolve with naked eye. For exact resolution group values, see the index pic at the lower right corner.
