Hi Guest, thank you for making a clever comment. Although it might seem very odd, I did that siply because all side-by-side shots revealed 100-300 supremacy over 50-500. So on all f/8 shots I decided to "tune up" Bigma pics in order to get performance close to 100-300 just to see if it's doable. And as you can see, Bigma gets pretty close then. OTOH, you might be right that spoils otherwise neat side by side comparison. So I might change that in the near future, separating out-of-the-camera shots comparison to "tuned" shots.

Why would you use USM and contrast boost for the lower left photo (Sigma 50-500)? You post comparison's which I appreciate, but then add USM to just the 50-500 and not the 100-330.

I'm glad this test was valuable to you. However, it was done by my fellow photographer Kerry Pierce. What I did was only selecting pics, cropping and assembling with comments. Sigma 100-300 is actually one of the rare Sigma lenses I never layed my hands upon. Based on others' tests I wanted to buy this lens while ago, but Sigma rep didn't have it on stock. That's why I bought 50-500 and shot tons of pics since than with varying success. Since I use Nikon D200 I'm much more satisfied with the Bigma. Hopefuly, it will be replaced with Sigma 120-300 sometime this year...

Thanks for your test .
Clearly the 100-300 is way above in sharpness and contrast above the bigma. Normal if we consider the huge range of the Bigma.
You also demonstrated something that I have witnessed my self : the only weak point of the sigma 100-300 is 300 wide open. Otherwise this lens is incredible
