Sigma 17-70 macroshots

Sigma 17-70m f2.8-4.5 focuses down to hardly useful 1 cm working distance (19 cm focusing distance) where it offers 1:2 magnification when set to 70mm focal length. Here are few samples where magnification varies from 1:2 to 1:3.

Excellent macros, and very sharp! I wonder, did you apply any sort of sharpening (or unsharp mask) to the images? I am planning to get this lens in the very near future. Thanks!

Hi Rose. Exactly that. This lens gives unusualy high 1:2 magnification but at silly short focusing distance. It is very hard (read: impossible) to lighten subjects so close to front lens element. All sample pics presented were shot at more relaxed distances of at least 1/2' or so but with sacrified magnification.

Thank you for sharing these - they're the first tests I've found which specifically look at the lens' macro capability. I'm considering this as a walk around lens, but I am used to taking great macros with my Pro1 and don't want to lose that. When you say it focusses to a "hardly useful 1cm working distance" at 70mm do you mean the end of the lens is just 1cm away from the subjct ? Rose

Hi, Miljenko, Thank you for sharing the macro photos here. The lens is sharp and the macro capability is awesome. Now I find the replacement for my beloved EF-S 18-55 :-)
