4294, which is the last of its kind in the world, is a cab-forward design that protected its crew
from asphyxiation during runs thru the long tunnels and snow sheds on its route thru the Sierra
Nevada from Sacramento, California to Sparks, Nevada. The engine and tender are a staggering
123 ft, 8 inches long, weighing a million pounds with a full load of fuel, and no cars attached.

Additional info on the monster can be found at these links:

Imagine how much fuel it used just to take its own weight over the mountains.

The original Incredible Hulk - makes UK locos, and European engines in general, seem quite puny. We never had a barrier like the Rockies to surmount, because we could always go round by sea. Wonderful trains.

Great reading both Vern & Paul.

I remember seeing the cab forwards as a kid when they would go through Lowell on their way into the Cascades and on to California. Often, there would be two or three at the head of t he train and a couple on re end as pushers to get the long trains up those grades. They would leave the Eugene yards and go through Lowell and on to Oakridge, Crescent and on to Klamath Falls before hitting California at Weed. I was awe struck by the steam powered RR's, and still love them today. Was this museum at Roseville?
