California Newt on Wet Grass

Stafford Lake, Novato, CA

Also known as Orange-bellied Newt, and found only in California.
The glands in the skin secrete a potent neurotoxin, hundreds of times more toxic than cyanide.
It is strong enough to kill humans, but only if ingested.
Their main predator is the gopher snake, which have developed resistance to the toxin.

Nice image. I used to hunt for newts when I was a small boy, back in the middle of the last century! Haven't seen any for years, though.
