That is a muskrat. It's very easy to tell when the pictures are as clear as yours, because they have dark whiskers, and nutria has much more prominent white whiskers. If you noticed the tail of the animal, nutria has round tails, while muskrats has flattened tails.

If it's a muskrat, they must be related to nutria

Not sure. I've seen a lot of muskrat, but no a Nutria. The head looks smaller than the Nutria in Verns recent photos.
