1839 Petite Head
N-8

Year: 1839
Type: Liberty (Matron) Head Large Cent
Variety: Petite Head/Head of 1840 (N-8)
Grade: RAW (Ex. PCGS 58) (Reynolds EAC 50+)
Mintage: 3,128,661

Another of the varieties of the 1839 large cents, this variety, N-8, is known
as both the "Petite Head" as well as the "Head of 1840". It is the obverse
head type that continues in 1840 and beyond but first makes it appearance in
this year. It should probably be considered with the type of 1840 through
1856, because of the obverse type but is typically grouped with the other
four obverse types present in 1839.

This beautiful example has nice even coloration, only the slightest amount
of wear on the high points and a couple of contacts mark scattered on both
sides. They do not detract from the overall eye-appeal and this coin is one
of the most beautiful large cents in my collection. A great deal of mint
luster remains despite the brief stay in circulation and a great example of
what an AU large cent should look like, in my opinion.

This coin was purchased from Tom Reynolds who graded it a 50+.
