1836 N-2

Year: 1836
Type: Liberty (Matron) Head Large Cent
Variety: N-2
Grade: RAW
Mintage: 2,111,000

The year 1836 is a transition year for the obverse portrait of Liberty. Different
varieties of the year show a slightly different bust starting with the last "Young
Head" vareities of 1835 to the slimmer bust of 1837. The present example, N-2, is
a fairly common variety. Instantly recognizable by the terminal die crack on the
reverse, the diagnostic on earlier states is the shape of the tip of the obverse
bust, in this case it is longer, narrower, and more pointed than on the earlier
versions. On the reverse, die gogue joining the feet of TE in STATES is quite
visible on this specimen, as well as a die scratch that connects the top and bottom
of the C in AMERICA. The above coin exhibits gorgeous tan surfaces with light wear
on the high points. Two planchet flaws are visible on the obverse, the first very
small and located in the fields to the right of stars 4 and 5, and a second in the
hair below and right of Liberty's ear. Mint luster remains in protected areas of
this coin, and the small defects aside, the overall eye appeal is superb on this
late die state example.

This coin was purchased from Doug Bird.
