1843 Petite Head, Small Letters
N-8

Year: 1843
Type: Braided Hair (Petite Head) Large Cent
Variety: Petite Head, Small Letters (N-8)
Grade: RAW (Ex. PCGS AU 58)
Mintage: 2,425,342

The year 1843 is the last major transition year for Liberty's portrait
in the large cents before they are discontinued in 1857. This example
is of the earlier Petite Head, and is followed by the so-called Mature
Head of later years. The variety pictured above is an N-8 -- a semi-
common R2- variety -- and can be identified by the repunching of the
date and the die gogues above stars 6 and 7 even on the later die state
example shown.

A nice carmel tan color with great surfaces, this coin has great in-hand
eye appeal. A touch of high-point wear and muted luster in the
unprotected areas of the devices and fields account for the non-mint
state grade. A very attractive coin, in my opinion.

This coin was purchased from Doug Bird.
