Year: 1846
Type: Liberty Head (Braided Hair) Large Cent
Variety: N-2, Small Date
Grade: RAW
Mintage: 4,120,800
This is another of the small date varieties of the 1846 Large Cent.
A nice light chestnut color and faded mint luster is complimented by very well struck devices,
with only a star or two showing some central weakness. There is some old verdergris,
more prevalent on the reverse, that attests to the originality.
This coin is an example of the N-2 Variety, most easily distinguised by the strong repunching
just left of the 1 in the date and the "mole" on Liberty's neck just below her ear.
This is a realtively common variety, only R-2. This coin seems to be in die state C
described by Grellman as "Vertical repunching left of upright of 1 gone.
Additional crack at OF." Earlier die states show more of the repunched 1,
and later die states have a cud forming along the reverse rim.
