I had the rare opportunity of shooting a lacrosse tournament on a glorious sunny day. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and I knew I was going to get very good shutter speeds for freezing fast motion. So I had to be there.
I initially thought that it was just a high school lacrosse tournament because I saw a lot of young kids around. But I later found out that Michigan was playing Michigan State, for both men’s and women’s teams. I was really fortunate. It was my first time watching a lacrosse game. I had an idea of how the game worked, but I got a much better understanding of the game after covering the event. I was also surprised at how physical the game was. To me it appeared to be just a touch more gentlemanly than American football. This event was also an opportunity to take my 300mm f/4 AFS for a sports shoot to test its performance. AF-S was a great feature to have especially since I was quite handicapped with my aging D100’s AF motor. AF was a hint faster, smoother and more silent on my 70-200mm f/2.8G AFS VR which I also brought along. I was pleased with the sharpness and color rendition of the images produced by both lenses. Sharpness of both lenses was comparable. However the 300mm, having a minimum aperture of f/4 didn’t produce as much background blur as I’d liked. |
