The reason the exposure is the same in all the night shots was because I also wanted to see what the effect varying the exposure (via changing the f stop) would have on the sky and buildings.
The second test provides information on two different characteristics of the 70 macro:
1. at what aperture the star pattern forms, and
2. purple fringing around bright lights, which seems to be gone by f5.6.
