Läckö Castle

Läckö, on the shore of Lake Vänern, is a large and fascinating place in which a
lot of the history is quite well preserved. The castle was built up in stages;
there are medieval areas, Baroque areas, and so on. Läckö was the special project
of (among other owners) one Magnus de la Gardie, a wealthy businessman who married
into the nobility, his family having come into the property after the unfortunate
death by execution of its previous owner. I hate it when that happens.

Magnus traveled here and there throughout the land, moving from one large home to
another and carrying all of his furniture with him. Or rather, other people carried
it for him. It must have been a hard life, having to watch those people straining
under the weight of dressers and dining room tables and what-not.

De la Gardie's wife had her own marzipan room at Läckö, by the way. (Bet you don't.)

Alas, they don't permit photography within the castle. I was limited to shooting
on the grounds outside, and within the courtyards. No matter -- fascinating place.
We want to go there every time we go to Sweden, at the very least so that we can
feel relieved about never having had to carry Magnus' stuff around Europe.
