This is along the Painted Desert Trail at Imperial NWR. Imperial was about 40 miles north of Yuma. These are Paloverde trees. They serve as nursery trees for young Saguaro Cactus by providing shade. If I recall correctly, the Paloverde eventually dies as the Saguaro consumes all the water and nutrients.
