I had not seen this behavior in Mallards before, but I've seen it twice this year. The Mallard Drake skims as fast as he can over the water. Sometimes they appear to be partially submerged, like a submarine. He moves so fast, had trouble keeping up with him. In fact, in this shot I had to add canvas to the right of the image to give him some space at the edge of the frame.
