Operator error here. Light shines directly on this nest for only a few minutes in the morning. I didn't think to adjust my flash for that, so the shadow areas are severely underexposed. I put this in as a very interesting story. I first thought this was a brightly colored moth and was shooting happily away. It eventually dawned on me that there were numbers and a bar code on this "moth", so I stopped to look at an image closely and sure enough, this is a piece of litter. The parent tried to feed it to each baby in turn. It even blew off the nest and the parent flew off to get it and tried to feed it to them again. I don't believe any of the babies actually ate it. This same behavior was observed again the next day. I'm wondering whether this is a teaching moment so that the babies don't eat something like this when they are out of the nest. I have a question about this in to probably the foremost bird expert in Reno. I will update the gallery when I hear back.
